OLD MINER  (3)

oldminer.jpg (30811 bytes)

"Old Miner" is rated a 3. This trail is a moderately difficult trail beginning in Spearfish Canyon and ending in Central City. The trail begins with the Canyon Climb,  gaining 1000 feet in elevation the first 3/4 mile. The trail visits the old silver mining community of Carbonate, complete with cemetery and an old two-story brothel. The trail winds through the old townsite and then enters Rubicon Gulch where the old mine can still be seen. Just north of the Richmond Hill Gold Mine, the trail climbs out of Rubicon Gulch and drops into Chism Gulch. The most challenging part of the trail is Heckman Hill…i.e. the Widowmaker - several hundred yards of steep, loose rock that will provide a real challenge for stock vehicles.  The remainder of the trail through Burno Gulch and along False Bottom Creek moves through beautiful Black Hills scenery.   The trail rejoins a main road at Maitland then it's a short run back to US Highway 385 and the campground.
